Our
Story

Barbara and Mel met in 2023 at a coffee shop in St. Augustine after many months of emailing back and forth. They were first put in touch by Dr. Karen Cox, lead palliative care doctor at Caura Hospital, and discovered that they both did the same training at INELDA.

Together they formed Death Café TT, as a way to normalise having conversations about death, and introduce the idea of end of life doulas to the local community.

Barbara has been focusing on expanding death literacy, creating conversations about death and dying, and supporting patients at Caura's palliative care ward. As an educator for many years, Barbara is excited to be working towards facilitating the training of doulas in Trinidad & Tobago and the region.

Mel has been exploring themes of death and transition that we experience throughout life. Working with grief as a tool for personal transformation has been her primary focus, and she is pursuing training as a grief councillor. She hosts grief writing sessions and enjoys collaborating with creatives on transmuting grief through various art forms.
